Local bagel fans who were dismayed when all the Kettleman's shops turned into Einstein outlets can now bask in a bit of poetic justice. The most recent Einstein shop to shutter, on NE Broadway in the Irvington neighborhood, will once again be a locally owned bagel shop with good bagels.
Eat Beat reports that Spielman Bagels is taking over the light-filled space on the corner of NE Broadway and NE 22nd (originally a Kettleman's before the takeover in 2011), with plans to open the first week of June. Not only will father and son owners Rick and Raf Spielman offer their full line of bagels, schmears and house-roasted coffee, they plan to add Jewish-deli-style treats like ruglach, hamantaschen, cheesecake, and challah. They might even expand into pastrami territory and make it an actual delicatessen.
But that's not their only big news. They're moving their Southeast Division location to a much bigger space across the street next to Son of a Biscuit, at 2111 SE Division St. The new SE space will offer patio seating and a vegetable garden. The duo plan to have it open by mid-July.
