Omake (御負け, alternatively おまけ?) is a Japanese term loosely meaning extra, popularly used by anime and manga fans to describe standalone bonus material such as concept art or DVD commentaries. Where One Piece is concerned, it most often refers to the non-canon gag strips that Eiichiro Oda produces outside the regular manga.

These come in three main formats:

  • Yonkoma strips, published in special issues of Shonen Jump (and, in one instance, the contemporary databook). These tend to commemorate holidays such as Christmas or New Year's.
  • Multi-page Straw Hat Theater strips, usually published in the series' log books. These tend to parody other genres such as science fiction or fairy tales.
  • Single-page art requests, usually from Jump's editorial department. These usually act as cover pages before yonkoma omake of the other serialized Jump works, which in turn tend to commemorate a holiday. Note that only art with explicit requests are included as omake.

It is common, though not universal, for the Yonkoma and Straw Hat Theater formats to depict the characters in a super-deformed art style.

List of Omake features[]

(Note: Since Shonen Jump cover dates are traditionally staggered several weeks behind the actual release dates,[1] most if not all Christmas-themed omakes are found in issues "officially" indexed as part of the following year.)
