New York Review of Architecture is rooted in New York but interested in architecture everywhere. We avoid themed issues, preferring instead to pursue multiple topics across issues. We are particularly interested in pieces that address audiences beyond architecture and design. We value writing that is critical, engaging, and accessible. We especially value writing from viewpoints that have been historically undervalued or ignored.

Generally, we seek pieces that are grounded and topical—but not click-baity. We appreciate strong reporting, original research, clear positions, and a sense of humor.

We develop most NYRA print pieces through direct assignments and commissions. Still, we are always interested in getting to know writers we’ve never worked with. If you have an interest in a topic that’s related to architecture and cities, however tangentially, we will be really happy to hear from you.

We are interested in ideas for essays, reported stories, and reviews. In your pitch, we want to hear the main idea and angle of approach. You don’t have to know exactly where you’re going yet, but we do want to know how you think you’ll get there. To pitch NYRA, email [email protected], and place “PITCH” at the front of the subject line. If we’re interested in your pitch, we will be in touch within four weeks. We don’t get annoyed—feel free to follow up!

A good pitch will:

  • Tell us what you will write about, your angle of approach, why it’s a good fit for NYRA, and why you’re the person to write it
  • Be brief and direct
  • Demonstrate familiarity with sources, especially for reported pieces
  • Give us a taste of your voice

The best way to know whether your piece will be a fit is to read the most recent issue of NYRA.

Our rates for essays and reportage start at $0.25 a word. Rates for commentary and review pieces start at $300. We also publish short, pithy reviews of shows, books, music, art, buildings, and other miscellany of between 100 and 200 words, for which we pay $30. We are always working on improving our rates and are open to negotiation.

NYRA worked with the Freelance Solidarity Project of the National Writers Union to create a standard contract and a statement of commitments that promotes fair practices for freelance writers, photographers, illustrators, and artists. Included in these commitments are:

  • Full payment for work within 30 days of an accepted first draft
  • A promise to indemnify and defend a freelancer against any third-party claim
  • A promise to include the writer in any decision-making about syndication
