What Sen Dog Can’t Live Without

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hair spray and the electric toothbrush. We asked rapper Sen Dog of Cypress Hill about his favorite workout equipment, button-down shirts he’s been wearing for decades, and go-to rolling papers.

Zig-Zags are the ultimate rolling paper. I’ve been using those since I started smoking cannabis many, many years ago. I’ve tried other papers, but I find for quality, it’s the best in the business as far as rolling papers. I like that they burn consistently, and they come in different sizes. I wouldn’t roll with anything else. And as for cannabis itself, California’s weed is ahead of the rest of the world. I’ve tried cannabis in many areas, and I still think California growers grow the best.

I started using Peloton’s bike and treadmill about three years ago — it keeps me in shape. I find their equipment is above and beyond everything I’ve worked out with before. It’s just really good gear. And both the bike and treadmill come with classes taught by professional instructors that I take regularly. They even start with warm-ups so you don’t injure yourself.

Pendleton’s shirts are classic. They’ve been a part of L.A. culture for as long as I can remember. We grew up on them. I think I got my first one around when I was 16 years old. When Cypress Hill went to do our first photoshoot, I got a Pendleton from Greenspan’s in Southern California and decided to use that along with my bucket hat to get my look across. I found these shirts to be very important to my look as Sen Dog the character. It helped us stand out from a lot of other hip-hop acts at the time. Now, I own maybe around 40 or 50 of them. It’s stylish and gangster all in one.

I’ve been wearing Vans since about the age of 14 or 15. They complete my stage persona, stay consistent with my L.A. street style, and I just think they look cool. They may have started out as a shoe for surfers and skaters, but I think they can go with anything, like Levi’s or even formal suits. I don’t have a specific style I stick to. I switch it up depending on what pants or shorts I’m wearing. But I really like the ones they’ve done with certain bands, like Led Zeppelin and Alice in Chains.

I’ve been shopping at Greenspan’s since I was 14 years old. Like I mentioned, for our first album, we got a wardrobe budget for a photoshoot and we went here. There was no question about it. We all said, “Yeah, let’s go to Greenspan’s and gear up there.” All the stuff we wore was from there. The store has fashions going back to the 1920s and anything after. The key to shopping there is going when you have a couple hours to spend, because they have so many styles to look at. When I go back to L.A., I always try to set aside at least an hour just to go and see what’s new. It’s not easy because they have so many different styles of clothing there, but I try to set myself apart by shopping there.

The Porto’s in the Los Angeles area is very popular, not just with Cuban people, but all kinds of people go there and experience their great Cuban dishes. These are all foods that my mom used to make for me growing up. Their recipes are very close to hers. It’s really good shit. There’s a plate called ropa vieja, which translates to “old clothes.” I don’t know why they call it that, but it’s really good. It’s a beef plate — very delicious.

I’ve ridden a lot of different bikes in my day. Indian Motorcycle approached me to represent them, and I’ve been with them for about four years. Their bikes have a distinct look and are very well made. I really like the Chieftain Dark Horse because it looks like a heavy bike, but it’s very well balanced and fast as heck. When I’m home, I use it on a daily basis, and it’s also a good touring bike. It gets respect from a lot of people, too.
