Of all the outdoor brands that have become cool among city people in recent years, Merrell is my favorite. I’m actually wearing a pair of (Sandy Liang–approved) Merrell Mocs right now — they’re my go-to shoes for dog walking, grocery shopping, and most especially air travel (they’re so easy to kick on and off in the TSA line or once you’re seated on the plane). Several Mocs are currently discounted as part of Merrell’s online-only winter sale, which also includes insulated boots, lots of hiking footwear, and cozy parkas at up to 40 percent off. From fleece-lined clogs to waterproof trail runners, I’ve listed the best deals below to help you prepare your feet for the cold months ahead.
Winter boots
Merrell Moabs (their many fans will tell you that it stands for “Mother of all Boots”) are known for being durable and comfortable. This insulated pair would be ideal for cold-weather hiking, but I’d also vouch for them as an excellent everyday winter boot.
If you’re looking specifically for snow boots, these are warmer than the Moabs and grippier on ice.
Lace-up boots give the best traction and control when you’re walking on ice, according to the footwear designers I interviewed when writing our guide to the best winter boots for women. But sometimes … you just want something you can slip on and off easily, and these are far sturdier than a pair of Uggs.
Also easy enough to slip on and off are these taller zip-up women’s winter boots made from waterproof leather.
Slightly less convenient to put on but significantly more elegant to wear are these lace-up leather boots with the fur.
Running shoes
Merrell’s Trail Glove shoes are designed to hug the foot, almost like socks. They’re made from lightweight breathable mesh and come in lots of fun colors, too.
Trail running during winter? I will be staying inside, but perhaps you are eager to keep up the hobby during the colder months and would benefit from these snug waterproof sneakers designed for that purpose.
Serious winter shoes (complete with thick lugged rubber outsoles) that feel as comfortable as a pair of fluffy house slippers.
Says Sandy Liang of her Mocs: “I love these for walking around all day. They hug my feet and make them so happy. There aren’t laces, so I pop them off in the car and shove my loaves back in when it’s time to walk.”
Liang owns a pair of these shearling Mocs, too, and calls them “the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn.”
Resembling a swampier-looking Croc, the Merrell Hydro Moc is a divisive shoe. But for all the fans out there, here’s the lined winter version on sale.
Outerwear
A stretchy jacket with thumbholes that could work as a hiking mid-layer or something to take the chill off during winter runs.
Or for more serious weather, a great parka with big, bulky pockets for well under $200.
