There are many ways you can support NumFOCUS

How would you like to partner with us?

Volunteer

We rely on community volunteers to help us run our mission-critical programs and initiatives.

There are four main focus areas for volunteers:

Project Support

We support our Sponsored and Affiliated projects by providing programs and resources that allow them to remain open and sustainable. Community volunteers help us manage and distribute resources for projects in a way that produces the greatest impact.

Small Development Grants Committee

The Small Development Grants Committee decides which projects to award funding to for our Small Development Grants program. You can read more about the committee’s role and responsibilities in the charter.

How to Engage: The committee accepts new members at the beginning of each year. Subscribe to our newsletter to be notified when new applications are being accepted.

Affiliated Selection Committee

The Affiliated Selection Committee was formed in an effort to include more community input and involvement around the selection process for our Affiliated Projects. This committee is responsible for evaluating applications from open source projects for Affiliated Project status with NumFOCUS and working with applicant projects throughout the review process.

How to Engage: The committee accepts new members once a year. Subscribe to our newsletter to be notified when new applications are being accepted.

Project Infrastructure Committee

The Project Infrastructure Committee helps manage digital infrastructure like cloud accounts for our Sponsored Projects. You can read more about the committee in its charter.

Project Incubator Committee

The Project Incubator Committee was formed to help prospective Open Source projects mature such that they can become NumFOCUS Affiliated or Fiscally sponsored projects. You can read more about the committee in its charter.

Security Committee

The Security Committee was formed to help NumFOCUS improve the safety of research, data, and scientific computing communities by assessing and making recommendations to address cybersecurity-related risk in NumFOCUS sponsored projects.

Diversity Equity & Inclusion

We envision an inclusive scientific and research community and we work to realize that vision through promoting diversity, equity and inclusion throughout our programs. Our community volunteers act as advocates for historically underrepresented and marginalized groups and help us carry out initiatives that increase the diversity of our community.

DISC Committee

The NumFOCUS Diversity & Inclusion in Scientific Computing (DISC) Committee was formed with the purpose of broadening participation and inclusion of underrepresented groups in the NumFOCUS ecosystem. The Committee strives to create and guide the implementation of initiatives that promote diversity, equity and inclusion in NumFOCUS projects, and provide a network of support and collaboration with diverse members of the community.

For more information, please view the DISC Committee Charter.

How to Engage: Elections for the Committee are held each year at the beginning of the year.

Elections

The Election Committee was created to plan and execute NumFOCUS board member elections in a fair, unbiased, and transparent manner. The knowledge of NumFOCUS’s stakeholder community is leveraged to advise on and administer (plan, publicize, execute, document, and deliver results transparently) the Board nomination and election procedures. Learn more in the committee’s Charter.

How to Engage: Membership is now open for the current election cycle. Please email if  you would like to participate.

Education

Our mission, to provide quality education in the field of scientific computing, is made possible by our community members. Their involvement and input help us keep our educational programs aligned with the needs of our community.

PyData

Our PyData events are a global event series facilitated by local and online planning committees. Events are held annually at different times depending on the current year’s events schedule. Learn more about joining a PyData event planning committee here.

How to engage: Subscribe to the PyData Newsletter and Follow PyData on Twitter to be notified of upcoming events and volunteer opportunities.

Contribute Code

Our open-source projects are developed and maintained entirely through community efforts. Each contribution helps our projects continue to provide high functioning, quality code. Every project has its own guidelines for how to contribute.
