Jennie Pegouskie is, in her own words, "a Seattle-based model, dancer and creative".

I first saw her earlier this week in Ed Sheeran's music video for Shape of You and was blown away by how stunning she is in it.

Aṣa (which means Hawk in Yoruba, and is pronouced "Asha") is the stage name of Nigeria Afro-pop singer Bukola Elemide. She mostly sings in English and Yoruba, and her songs feature catchy rhythms from her acoustic guitar, and lyrics ranging from social commentary to romance.

Latina Roxann Dawson had a memorable role as the half-Klingon, half-human chief engineer B’Elanna Torres on Star Trek: Voyager. She has not stopped making her mark on media, however, since she turned her hand to directing during ST:V and discovered she had talent behind the lens as well as in front of it. She’s also co-authored several science fiction novels.

Reprising the role of fictional astronaut Uhura in the new Star Trek films is just one of Dominican-Puerto Rican Zoe Saldana’s thespian accomplishments. But I think it’s my favourite.

‘When I go to the D.R., the press in Santo Domingo always asks, "¿Qué te consideras, dominicana o americana?" (What do you consider yourself, Dominican or American?) I don't understand it, and it's the same people asking the same question. So I say, time and time again, "Yo soy una mujer negra." ("I am a black woman.") [They go,] "Oh, no, tú eres trigueñita." ("Oh no, you are 'dark skinned'") I'm like, "No! Let's get it straight, yo soy una mujer negra." ("I am a black woman.")’

Summarized from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Teng:

Vienna Teng is the stage name of Taiwanese-American pianist and singer-songwriter Cynthia Yih Shih.

Although Ms. Shih began her career as a software engineer, she decided to pursue her music career full time after she was signed by Virt Records in 2002. From 2002 to 2010, Vienna Teng released 4 studio albums.

Among her fans is late-night television host David Letterman, who immediately booked her to perform on his show. He praised her debut album:

"I've heard the entire CD, and there's not a dud on this."

In 2010, Vienna Teng was named a Next Century Citizen by Future-ish.

From actual astronauts last week, we go to Fictional Astronauts this week. Leading the way with her seminal role as communications officer Lieutenant Uhura in the original TV series Star Trek is actress and singer Nichelle Nichols. After the Star Trek series was cancelled, Nichols volunteered at NASA to help recruit minority and female personnel. One of her recruits was Charles Bolden, who was an astronaut...and is now Administrator of NASA.

Astronaut and physician Mae Jemison became the first black woman in space aboard the Endeavour space shuttle in 1992. She cites Commander Uhura from the television series Star Trek as one of her inspirations when she was growing up. Little did she know that later in life she would appear on Star Trek herself (in The Next Generation episode “Second Chances”). She continues to reach out to minority students to get them interested in science.

"In kindergarten, my teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I told her a scientist. She said, 'Don't you mean a nurse?' Now, there's nothing wrong with being a nurse, but that's not what I wanted to be."

“The best way to make a dream come true is to wake up.”

This week’s theme was inspired by my attendance at the Royal Aeronautical Society’s Women in Aviation & Aerospace conference last Friday. Inaugurating Female Astronauts week is Ellen Lauri Ochoa, an engineer and inventor who is now Deputy Director of the Johnson Space Centre. She became the first Hispanic woman in space on a Discovery shuttle mission in 1993 and she holds multiple patents for novel optical inspection systems.

Opening this week’s theme, Comedians, is Shappi Khorsandi, British-Iranian stand-up comic. Her family fled Iran after a satirical poem published by her father, Hadi Khorsandi (also a stand-up comic as well as a poet), following the Iranian revolution was perceived as critical of the new government. She has appeared on numerous British television shows, including Have I Got News for You, on BBC Radio 4 and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She tells hilarious anecdotes about race relations in Britain.

The last laureate of this week, Chilean poet, diplomat and feminist, Gabriela Mistral, was the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945. Born into poverty, she won recognition for her published poetry while working as a teacher’s aide. As she gained stature, her position in the Chilean education system became more influential and she was able to champion reforms to expand access to those not from the privileged classes. She traveled widely and guarded her personal life closely. She died of pancreatic cancer in 1957.

And in breaking news, what a wonderful way to round off the week: The 2011 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to three women of colour. The winners are Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Leymah Gbowee of Liberia and Tawakul Karman of Yemen for 'their non-violent struggle for the safety of women and for women's rights to full participation in peace-building work'. Live text-based coverage from the Guardian can be viewed here.
Rigoberta Menchú Tum is a Guatemalan human rights campaigner. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 for her work to promote the rights of Guatemala’s indigenous peoples, who were tortured and killed in great numbers during the 36 year civil war that finally ended in 1996.
