Rogers is closer to taking over Bell’s 37.5 percent stake in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) after Canada’s Competition Bureau decided not to take action on the sale.
Rogers announced in September that it was buying Bell out of its share of MLSE, which owns the Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors, along with some other Toronto sports-related items. The deal is reported to cost $4.7 billion and will make Rogers the majority owner with 75 percent of the business since it already owns 37.5 percent.
The deal still needs to be approved by the CRTC and the sports leagues before it will be finalized, but getting clearance from the Competition Breau will be a solid first step towards full ownership.
