Murakami defies protests to accept Jerusalem prize (c) Reuters, Baz Ratner
Haruki Murakami made a powerful "Egg and Wall" speech at the 24th International book fair in Israel on February 15th, explaining his controversial decision to accept Jerusalem Prize while Israel is still at war. Back in Japan, the mainstream media reported as if Haruki expressed his strong objection against Israel, but his speech (full scripts) doesn't specify who's the Wall. To me it sounds more like a warning from a post-war generation.
"Egg and Wall" has always been the main theme in his literature. Rather, what caught my attention was this rare recollection of his father who was sent to China during WW2, joining the invading force of Imperial Japanese Army. ;
"My father died, and with him he took his memories, memories that I can never know. But the presence of death that lurked about him remains in my own memory. It is one of the few things I carry on from him, and one of the most important,"I wonder how many in the audience realized a magnitude of the implication; he's telling them how it's like to be an invader's son. This reminds me of his 1995 novel "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle" which revolves around the 1939 massacre of Japanese troops by Soviet soldiers in the Mongolian desert of Nomonhan.
In 1994, Murakami visited the Nomonhan site, where spent cartridges and shards of helmets from the battle still can be found. "I felt as though I had experienced the battle myself," he told Ian Buruma. "I wondered what I would have done if I had been a Japanese living in 1939." [...] "The most important thing is to face our history, and that means the history of the war," Murakami told Buruma. "People talk about the atomic bomb, but they don't want to talk about the massacres in China--I think I have a responsibility for those things," he told Harper's Bazaar (March 1993). - via Ilusão da Semelhança
Haruki revealed Ian Buruma off-recordly that his father once told him some really disturbing war experiences, saying "it may be the reason why I still can't eat Chinese food." Totally horrified, he was too afraid to ask further questions. Later Buruma put it into print, and Haruki was so furious that he demanded her to take down. (source)
An Egg can be turned into Egg Crusher by the System. Then the Egg has to carry all the lives it's taken for the rest of its life. And it doesn't end in one generation.

Well, it sounds like Japanese are living in an eutopian flower field. Comments in Japanese blogs that introduce his speech are praising him. I think I was certainly one of them when I was in Japan, now in US I am rather on the side of the non-Japanese peoples' opinions against Mr. Murakami as you show here. Or It may be that some arts are non-realistic, and that kinds of arts never thrives in US where people are very practical and realistic.
ReplyDeleteThe real motive is anybody's guess. It amazes me how each and every one of our views is based on (and limited to) his/her own ethnic origin and nationality.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. Japanese media should know how their all-out praise to their Murakami is, in fact, putting him in an ambivalent situation.
All said, I'm still not sure whether Haruki identifies himself as an Egg. Maybe not.
