オバマ勝利宣言の「a people」：Obama on Election Night

"The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even in one term, but America – I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you – we as a people will get there." (The reference to MLK's I've Been To The MountainTop)

（訳）この先も道は長い。険しい登り坂です。1å¹´、いや1任期かけてもそこには辿り着けないかもしれない。でも、アメリカよ― 私たちはきっとそこに辿り着く、それを今夜ほど確かな手応えとして感じたことはありません。私はみなさんに約束します。―私たちは全国民一丸となって必ずやそこに辿り着くのだと。"　（キング牧師「私は山頂に行った」を受けた下り）

Listening to the speech, I asked my son, "What does he mean by a people?  Dr. King said the same word at the end of his last speech. If you add 'a' to 'people' in Japan, your English teacher won't give you a point.  Is that like all people put together as one?"  He said "Yes."  Beautiful. 

As a sidenote; The proclamation, "It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America" was a beautiful reference to "A Change Is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke.

演説聴きながら「この"a people"ってのは日本の英語の授業でやるとバッテンなんだけど、キング牧師も最後の演説でこう言ってたよね、これって、“みんなひとつ”ってこと？」と聞い たら、息子が「そうそう」と答えておった。いい言葉。英語はこういう芸当ができるからなあ…。

冒頭オバマが高らかに宣言した「Change Has Come to America」は、サム・クックが1964年に歌った黒人初のメッセージソング「ア・チェンジ・イズ・ゴナ・カム」へのトリビュートね。

いや、それにしてもあの日はすごかった。例えばジム。みんなとっとと運動済ませて帰りたいから普段はテレビの前なんてオフの人以外いないのに、一般の人の喜びを伝える談話が入ると、ついついその涙に見入ってしまうんだよね。ふと気づくとみんなパンツ履きながらとか見てて、見てる者同士が言葉を交わしたり。いろんな肌の人が。こんなこと本当に今まで無かったよ。
