A story about a man giving up — and that wasn’t just the film.
Have to say, it’s stunning to look at. The sets, the costumes, the shots; all of these are so well done, they’ve captured the essence of the period to a tee.
The problem with Zama is that it’s so dull. Nobody shines. The relevance of the story is only mildly interesting to begin with—the execution of it is downright dreadful. A key theme of the film is restraint, and perhaps some of the directing choices here were to reinforce that; but for me it trades poise for prosaicness, bordering into the pretentious.
It’s a slow burning candle that goes out just before the end—the climax being you drifting off into a long sleep, if you haven’t already by then.
