Nimo-nah.
A cool concept backed by a nice animation style, but I just couldn’t click with this film. It starts off quite awkwardly and the pacing threw me off—then Nimona arrives, and it quickly goes downhill.
The protagonists are anti-heroes, so I get they need to be flawed, but Nimona just annoyed the hell out of me. I felt Riz Ahmed’s Ballister would have been fine on his own (though I understand this is a wholesale change to practically everything in the film).
More than enough cringe moments, jokes that fall short and sequences that don’t feel original. It’s a shame that a film which isn’t afraid to break barriers (LGBTQ representation in children’s animation is fantastic—and fuck all the reviews criticising this) isn’t memorable enough to do anything more, and falls into a generic landslide.
