I'm Thinking of Ending Things

I don't know where to start with this one but I guess I have to start somewhere.

The dialogue between the two main characters for me, was dry at the beginning, but got better as they continued the conversation.

Throughout the film I had several questions. Why is the main character going back and forth in time? Why were her painting in the basement? How old are the parents at that present time really? All this didn't add up and this was one hour in.

At this point I was thinking of ending things myself. Yeah, I wanted to turn it off because I had absolutely no clue where this was going and it was racking my brain.

I wanted to turn it off so badly but I gave it a chance.

To my understanding, all the abstract visuals back and forth in time were a blurred collection of memories the janitor (or Jake) had. The janitor is suffering from an illness of old age (Alzheimer's perhaps or Lewy Body Dementia) and his memories, achievements, parents arguments, Tulsey Town ice cream, women encounters, all come back as a confusing, hazy image with no real chronological older.

This goes back to the young couple in the beginning. He clearly remembers that they had a really deep connection, which is why at some points the two characters are blurred, (she sees him in the portrait at the farm house). When two people have a deep connection, it's possible, or, most likely that they ''lose'' themselves in the other.

Even though Jake is in his hazy days where his brain isn't working properly, the clearest he remembers is how he fed his mother, the pain she endured and a relationship with a woman he thought was something extraordinary and rare.

The ending reminded me of Lynch's Mulholland Drive. Not a big fan of endings like this but for this one I guess it tied in some unanswered questions I had in the beginning.
