Primarily set in the heart of New York City, Coppola's 'The Godfather' is a road trip of sorts that peruses along a coast created by loyalty, maintained by trust, and threatened by the bubbling discourse of revenge and suspicion.
Outdone in spirit by the charismatically authoritative appeal of Marlon Brando - it is through Pacino that Michael's evolution as a character reaches beyond his tailor-made bravado. Eyes glazed with emotion - albeit pride, hesitation, or begrudged madness - his silence is compounded with body language that has a story of its own to tell.
Concluding with a closed door and open endings - a world and existence colored by the complexity of corruption fades to black; for some viewers this then fades to nothing.
Easily accounted for as someone blinded by new-found complacency: There lingers a subtle and almost whispered reminder that Michael's modus operandi is justified and conditioned within the larger context of a system where reputations and fiscal peculiarities can be the difference between a sinking ship and a successful journey.
Knowing this we can wonder
what Michael would rather call home:
A throne made of silver,
or a cage made of gold?
