Shortly after its release, I remember seeing La La Land on New Years and knowing little to nothing about the film as I entered the theater. Seeing it on the big screen and taking in the music, its vibrant cinematography, and the plot line – I instantly fell in love with this musical. It felt so revolutionary for me.
This feels like a love letter to Los Angeles and similar to its predecessor I believe it took inspiration from, Singing in the Rain. Both musicals are classics that will only grow with appreciation through time. La La Land is a more modern take on the city, being vibrant but still retaining layers of old Hollywood.
But the true standout of this film is its ability to immerses the audience into the beautiful world of jazz. Following an inspired jazz pianist, Sebastian, who is struggling to make it in thid oversaturated city. The art of jazz is balanced beautiful to not only express his emotions but the journey his character goes through. Since watching, I have personal gained a greater interest in this genre discovering great jazz musicians such as; Dave Brubeck and Duke Ellington.
This films ability to stylize color will remain ann inspiration through my own projects. From its visual cinematography or its stylistic choices for fashion. It truly feels like ‘Another Day of Sun’ with each rewatch.
