I know it's Thanksgiving, but we need to get Emerald Fennell out of the kitchen. She can't cook, she's made yet another ugly mess, and I think she's even starting to scare the help. In contrast to my first new release of the holiday, Napoleon, which had no ideas at all, Emerald Fennell has dozens to run through, just like Ridley Scott ran through battles, names, and dates. One idea is to make a homoerotic boarding school thriller, another is to paint a picture of class struggle, pocked with metaphorical garden statues and strewn with shitty, obvious music choices. In the end her ideas amount to Teorema by someone who didn't understand it, Parasite by someone who thought the Park family were the arch villains, or The Talented Mr. Ripley deprived of its sexuality and tension. What's left in the smoke of all the conceptual misfires are a series of boring provocations and unmemorable characters, barely held together by a cast who at least are looking as nice as the lighting. But even the cinematography isn't really a plus here, so much as another means for Fennell to drill her points and exert a style so mannered and predictable that it, like everything else, in spite of all the pomp, is deathly dull. The meal, like all these characters, is spoiled rotten. Undercooked. Unfit for human consumption.
