Wow, I already loved this movie but I really do feel a whole new love for it now. Fundamentally a working man's tale about the value of helping your fellow human not just from the goodness of your heart but for the ideals that every fellow human deserves these things by simply living. Totally missed the anti-italian racism in this originally from Potter and how pointedly George helps an Italian immigrant family. It would be nice if there were more the two black people in the town though.
Jimmy Stewart is maybe his best here. Using all his charm, comedy and drama. The shot of him staring straight down the camera gave me chills in the theater. This plot has been copied and pasted and parodied all over but there's a reason this one still hits. It's cause it is the best Christmas movie. Not because it has the best Santa or the most snow or even all the angels. It's because it's about how helping people isn't just a good thing to do, it's the right thing.
