I have never been this genuinely unsettled by a film of this kind. Generally I come away from a good horror film respecting the craft more than actually being scared, but Robert Eggers’ The Witch disturbed me in a way that that no other film has quite managed. The restrained approach makes the film unique and absorbing. The gorgeous cinematography, wonderful performances (even from the children), chilling score, and incredibly well-written script that deals with complex themes of faith and family all make the The Witch a masterpiece of horror. I’m even more hyped for The Lighthouse now.
