Mad Max: Fury Road is the highly acclaimed action movie that blew people away by how big the spectacle was whilst also keeping the movie grounded.
When I first saw this movie I was really disappointed because I felt baited. I thought I was going into a movie based around Max but in reality it’s more about the people around Max whilst also getting into some crazy shit. Well now that I knew what to expect I had an absolute blast with this movie. This movie is fantabulous. One thing I love more than anything in this world is practical effects and this movie has just that. The action in this movie is so so good. This movie is just one big line of cocaine with some down time where you can freshen up and catch your breath but in 10 minutes, you’re going back to that line and doing some more and I just love it.
This movie looks absolutely gorgeous. The use of colour is so so good especially the sandstorm sequence which was just eye candy. I love the barren sandy dusty look of the movie it looks so good. The costume design is amazing and the vehicles are something else. Everything that you see in this movie will make you believe that you are watching a post apocalyptic world.
Something that I like that this movie does is that a lot of the main characters are women but you never feel like the movie is feeding you this women empowerment message because it’s not. And I really appreciate that because nowadays it seems like if women are in something, the filmmakers have to feed it down out throat saying “hey you see that? Women can do everything in this world you know” and I’m left there thinking “I came here to watch a movie not to be taught that women are powerful you dumb fuck” but this movie doesn’t do that and I appreciate it.
Like I said, women dominate the screen and the main actor who dominates it is Charlize Theron who was great in this movie. I haven’t seen a lot from her but I’m guessing this ranks somewhere near the top of her performance. Tom Hardy was great as Max. A very minimalistic performance because the movie just needed him to be there, do a lot of badass shit, mumble and grunt and yeah that’s it. It sounds like a generic Tom Hardy performance but hey it works. And I was surprised by how good Nicholas Houlst was in this. I genuinely couldn’t recognise him until I looked up who played Nux.
I love the score in this movie. It feels so grand when it needs to and somber when it needs to but I think my favourite piece from this movie has to be Brothers In Arms which has this kinds electronic feel to it and it transitions to an orchestral sound so smoothly it sounds so good.
This movie just proved that my memory is bad because I didn’t love this movie on the first viewing but now I genuinely love it this movie is one of the best action movies I’ve ever seen and I actually wanna watch it again. Like right now.
