Posthumanist Bambi. The man-made instrument that killed Bambi’s mother evolves and becomes his surrogate caregiver. An open hearted plea for leading with kindness in a indifferent world.
Human characters are given no dialogue to serve a ironic twist; the dehumanizers become dehumanized despite the fact that they’re the catalyst for the entire narrative. The real enemy of kindness is indifference which is a heavily programmed worldview, held by both human and animal. Open-hearted selflessness only naturally becomes its chief antagonist.
Interesting work. DreamWorks continues to show up Disney over the past decade with the biggest swings for the fences. Not everything works, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Unfortunately, the Execs don’t appreciate their own artists as this is the last film to be produced in-house at the studio and future output will all be outsourced. Dreams can only work for so long before shareholders start making demands.
