From the first chase sequence, the flashbacks and “jumpscares” are edited in such a rapid and manic way as if the movie is screaming to you “I’m crazy and you shouldn’t take me seriously” and this movie keeps that energy throughout its whole run time. The action and practical work is a sight to behold and leads to some of the most unhinged stunts and sequences in any action movie. The harsh bright colors of the desert cross with the over the top make-up and costume design to give texture to this world of such sheer heat and roughness that you can swear you are sweating. The breakneck pace and unhinged cast give the idea that this is just a normal day in the wasteland. It radiates the feel of those classic 80s movies that this franchise originated from, only here, it’s at its fullest potential. Even when the aging cg rears its head, the movie’s so balls to the walls that it fits right in. The mesh of old and modern filmmaking and atmosphere paints a harmonious portrait of unabashed insanity that permeates every day in this beautiful horrifying world from the mind of one of the most beloved creatives in the business. When it’s over all you can think of is “What a day. What a lovely day.”
