Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road

With Mad Max: Fury Road, George Miller and his beautiful style are unleashed. What he has here is the budget and technology to make THE Mad Max film he has obviously always wanted to make. This is clearly his vision in complete, and it is a masterpiece.

I’m sure most know what this action film is about, but I’ll still give a brief synopsis in case an uncultured swine stumbles upon this review. Mad Max: Fury Road is essentially one big chase, and we watch as in an apocalyptic future, a group of individuals fleeing from a harsh and cruel society are endlessly pursued.

The production design, alone, makes this worth a viewing. Each car is so intricately detailed and so passionately designed. Even if it’s only on the screen for less then a minute, the car is given personality and life. This alone is a telltale sign that Miller actually cares about this remake. It is not just a cash grab, but instead an artistic and masterful vision from a director who truly cares about the Mad Max universe.

The film's characters are also interesting. Each of the main ones - Nox, Max, and Furiosa - are given some depth. And yeah, it’s not Travis Bickle or Jake LaMotta level depth, but keep in mind this is an action film. The primary goal is not necessarily to create deep, thought provoking characters, but instead create exciting action. So the fact that Mad Max: Fury Road not only creates one but several characters of interest most definitely sets it apart. Each seem to be fighting some sort of personal demon. The most evident is Max, who seems to constantly mentally struggle with the thought he couldn’t save everyone. There’s hints Furiosa as well struggles with her past - when Max asks her what she wants, she says “redemption.”

The cinematography is utterly gorgeous. The cars and the apocalyptic wasteland are strangely beautiful. I also love the orange hue to practically everything. You can practically feel the gritty sand and the rust coming off of, well, everything.

The action too is, to put it simply, phenomenal. You're rarely given a moment to breathe; the film is rather relentless, with action almost always on the screen. And despite the fact it’s mostly the same (our heroes being pursued and attacked by our antagonists) it never feels repetitive, and never grows old. And despite its complexity, it’s trackable too; you can easily follow what is happening on the screen.

A lot of people praise the ending, and although I do have some reservations about it, I still firmly believe this is an action masterpiece. I’m sad I never got to see it in the theater, and hope to one day witness it there. That would be one hell of a time.
