Wesley Casillas-Lara’s review published on Letterboxd:
Shane Black renews his signature wit carried over from Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but with a much tighter and focused story than his previous effort to craft one of the funniest comedies of the 2010s. You can make the argument that Black likes to make the same movie every single chance he gets and that's not technically wrong. Many instances of that are evident here, even down to how bodies are discovered and discarded. But the casting and vastly different vibes Crowe, Gosling, and Rice (the latter of whom is a freaking co-lead, let's be real) give off bring a refreshingly positive spin on Black's usual dark-edged comedy. It's directors like Shane Black and Guy Ritchie that seem to understand how to make a witty script feel genuine without existing purely as a vessel for sarcastic quipping. The usual issue of Black's writing being a little too fast-paced and twisty for its own good is still present in The Nice Guys, but there's much more of a beating heart amidst the seedy nihilism of corporate greed and conspiracies. I'm not surprised that the movie flopped, just disappointed because I'd rather live in a world with sequels to this over any Netflix franchise any day (GLOW excluded, give them their show back you cowards).
