Michael Keaton and Catherine O’Hara excel with manic humor, aided by practical effect gags that rival the original movie. Unfortunately it feels like about an hour of this 100 minute movie is occupied by completely self-serious generic legasequel mediocrity about Winona Ryder being a bad mom to Jenna Ortega and having Beetlejuice trauma, which would honestly be its own kind of funny if it was more over-the-top and melodramatic. But it’s not, so I’m left wondering what happened to all the comedy. Still better than many of Tim Burton’s other recent efforts, especially in its strongest moments.
