Nikolas A.’s review published on Letterboxd:
Still terrifying, must be the scariest slasher I have seen and one of the most effective, despite its age. I loved that it takes itself seriously and the film has such a creepy and unsettling vibe. Home invasion scenarios, generally films that show a violation of the personal space that is one’s house, are perhaps the most terrifying for me and this fits right in.
There are many sequences I found chilling still. The creepy phone calls and that they were coming from inside the house, the frequent POV shots of the killer and that, unlike other slashers, you never see him directly which I think works greatly in the movie’s favour. Him traversing the rooms of the house with no one realising was very well-done. The mood and chilling atmosphere of the film are superb, I was quickly invested in what was going on. The kills may be subdued in nature, not as overtly graphic as what we may be used to nowadays, but what matters is how surprising and generally well-prepared they are. There is suspense involved in each and every one of them and because the characters are somewhat likeable you care about their murders.
Speaking of characters, I enjoyed most of them in the film, especially Olivia Hussey’s Jess, the protagonist and Final Girl. She was well-acted, had a developed personality and her plot line and interaction with her boyfriend gave her quite a lot of emotional depth and complexity. She was independent and an actually strong lead. Although the boyfriend stuff were perhaps the most tedious and there were times when the pacing was iffy, near the middle of the film. Also have to mention Ms. Mack, she was such a mood whenever on-screen.
But overall I found Black Christmas amazing, for me in the top pantheon of slashers alongside Halloween and Scream. It has an exceptionally unsettling atmosphere that really elevates the whole narrative, not to mention the amazing and very creepy ending.
