Revisited a film I considered pretty formative as a teen, combined with a Heartbreaker obsession contributing to a belief a jean jacket and nicotine habit could make the most unremarkable man irresistible. Was resonant in a way that brings me shame upon a revisit.
Much more meditative than I remembered, picturing a tight, sparse picture in my memory. Score is far more present than remembered, its second act returning to nature making up much more of the Malick blueprint than I had thought.
Warren Oates is killer here.
A certain charm here, the haze of youth and overcommitment, the idea that even with someone you hate, a bond has formed that can never be broken. That you must follow it to its self-destructive end, regardless of the consequences.
Riotously funny in moments, there's certainly a revelation to be had that all this sincere waxing poetic voiceover is much more meant to point and laugh than to clutch your heart and yearn.
One of the great American films, period. Feels nice to watch good movies again.
