I AM NOT SAYING I HATED IT! Stylistically, it was fantastic. I adored the stylistic choices, really, I did; the pulpy acting, retro cinematography, 35mm film, bright colors, the GORGEOUS eyeshadow. A lot of fantastic little details came together and created a visual gem.
I can appreciate and enjoy the blatant mockery of patriarchal cliches and over-sexualization of women in film; narcissistic feminism, however, is not cute. It’s not that the movie’s ✨powerful message✨ couldn’t penetrate my thick, women-hating skull. I understood the symbolism, it just didn’t click with me.
Maybe it’s just a pet peeve of mine, but it annoys the hell out of me when people refer to self-centered, manipulative women as strong feminist icons. It’s hypocritical and ironic; and YES, I am fully aware that Elaine is supposed to represent both men’s fear of women AND female empowerment simultaneously, but it still doesn’t make me feel differently. There is a line between satire and serious, but in this movie that line is nonexistent. It’s too hard to decipher what is supposed to be hyperbolic and what is supposed to be genuine.
I was bored. Without the stunning 60s technicolor revival aspects, this film would be nothing. It wouldn’t be given anybody’s time of day. Now, I’m not saying that it’s absolute shit, it’s not a bad movie, I’m just saying it’s not some revolutionary masterpiece of social commentary.
Ok, now here’s the part where everybody who loves this movie compares me to the type of anti-feminist girl who tears other women down to gain male attention. Go ahead, call me a “pick-me girl,” I dare you.
