coming out of the theater all i could think about was watching part 2
i slept on it and now im getting more worried about it than excited
like…this was reeeeally good
first off i loved Elphaba, such inspiring witch representation,
i could just feel all the quirky little girls that for whatever reason feel different than everybody, the kids that get bullied and made fun of for their looks watching this and realizing how special they truly are (defying gravity was literally a hero arc transformation scene)
the depiction of fascism and the “tools” fascist leaders use depicted with accuracy coming from a mainstream Hollywood movie, not only a Hollywood movie but a musical starring none other than miss racially ambiguous Grande??? that was not on my 2024 bingo card, then again i have not read the book (probably will now) or seen the broadway adaptation so that must be contributing to my surprise
it was done so well in this first installment that it will be hard (very easy in theory) for such a mainstream thing to continue it right
my prediction is that the radicalization of elphaba will turn into the classic “leftist terrorist” adaptation and i want to be proven wrong so badly
now back to things i loved, Grande and Erivo’s voices gave me chills multiple times and nearly brought me to tears and all my close friends know I HATE MUSICALS and musical sounding songs with a passion
the costume and hair design was also a beautiful creative touch especially in this era of rushed netflix and amazon adaptations that feature elaborate costumes or historical costumes made of what it seems like plastic and discarded fabrics of a fast fashion chain
i do think that they were a little too clean and stiff at times but the craftsmanship and artistic vision was undoubtedly there
the visuals are lacking that technicolor and practical effects magic the og wizard of oz had but hey at least they didnt abuse the cast and animals to make it soooo ill let it slide
this would have been and easy five star
if all the sapphic tension between the female leads was realized, they had so many moments were it would have been so organic and natural and sweet if they just simply kissed
