This movie is pretty deeply disturbing.
While I didn't find it as gripping as Dreyer's Vampyr ten years later, it can probably be argued that the latter would not exist without the former, and Schreck's monster is much scarier.
As with all black and white cinema that's stayed relevant to today, the use of shadow and movement is excellent, lending credence to the idea that limitation is the key to creativity. There are a lot of interesting themes that stay relevant today, whether the movie is thinking about a predatory and unjust land-owning class or economic anti-immigrant sentiment or whether it's just trying to be a good spook.
It's 94 minutes, get in and get out, and never boring.
