As someone who was very afraid that the nostalgic vibe of the film would feel forced, I must say I found it extremely sweet and well-balanced. It doesn’t build on the first movie, true, but expecting that would be unreasonable anyway. Catherine O'Hara delivers a flawless performance, as if she hasn’t stepped out of character since the 1988 original. It’s impossible not to laugh during her scenes. However, Michael Keaton hasn’t fully recaptured the old Beetlejuice energy. Jenna Ortega is such a perfect casting choice for this film that she fits right in. If you expect it to have the same originality as the first film, you won’t enjoy it. But if your expectation is to witness the direction the story of these characters you once danced along with during the musical scenes on TV as a kid has taken, you’re sure to be fully satisfied.
