I make a point of watching this with my family at least once every holiday season, usually on Christmas Eve or on the big day after everyone has gone home and we’ve settled in for the night.

Every time, I am blown away by it. There is too much that’s perfectly done to list in one go, and too few imperfections to point out.

Every time, every single time, I am moved to tears by its powerful timeless message and the gifted cast and crew who brought it to life.

Most of all, I’m reminded of the George Baileys in my life, the ones who sweat and toil every day of their lives and carry the burdens of so many on their shoulders, who never get a statue erected or a town named after them but are among the richest men I know. My friends…my father.

I close my eyes
Think about the path I took
Just when I think this life has gotten the best of me
I can see my mother in the kitchen
My father on the floor
Watching television
It’s A Wonderful Life
Cinnamon candles burning
Snowball fights outside
A smile below each nose and above each chin
So happy they found me
Love was all around me
Stomp my boots before I go back in
