Why do I insist on putting up with this film every year? Good question. It’s genuinely impressive how this film goes out of its way to squander any potential goodwill it might be able to sequester by being as tone deaf, repulsive and monstrously mean-spirited as possible at nearly every turn. The film needed more of the unexpectedly sweet bond between Davey and Benjamin. The film needed more of Whitey’s kindheartedness being repaid to him. It’s no secret why this film is so critically reviled, but the few good elements it does have manage to peek their heads through on occasion. I suppose it’s what keeps bringing me back, only to smack me out of my gourd with a transphobic jab or a snotshit fountain of regurgitated glory. The chosen people definitely deserve better than this, I’ll say.
