love the way it calls attention to the artificiality of it all, i think Wes Anderson has a style that already feels like a stage production so that framing fits perfectly, and this film looks wonderful with it’s sunwashed colors, but i can’t help but feel a little disappointed in this one. i’ve seen a lot of comparisons to Wes’ earlier works(particularly Darjeeling) and while i do understand why some people would prefer that with it returning focus to the emotional core, but for as good as those earlier films are they’ve never quite hit the same for me(especially because i was never on the “Wes has lost his humanity train”, i find Isle Of Dogs and French Dispatch to both be very touching, it’s just that his earlier films tended to put the spotlight on that, if anything this feels most similar to The Life Aquatic to me). not to say this film isn’t excellent, it’s just not the S tier Wes i usually expect. the humor is absolutely up to snuff though, showing had a decent variety of people and pretty much all of them were laughing throughout, i think the visual gags in this movie are especially strong.
