i wrote that as my letterboxd review for this film along with a five star rating on september 24th, 2022 when it was first announced. i was certain that there would be nothing to keep me from adoring this film.
unfortunately, now almost two years later, following the film’s theatrical release, i was not in love with it as much as i’d hoped☹️
while MaXXXine was still a fun film, i found that it was lacking greatly in comparison to both X and Pearl. it felt like this film was just simply missing its X factor. mia goth’s performance, while still great, was much less of a spectacle here. the supporting characters i felt were also severely underutilized and i would’ve loved to spend a bit more time with some of them. kevin bacon, however, was by far the standout in this film.
i found the third act to lean a bit more on the generic side. i would’ve loved a less predictable finale. i would’ve also loved to go more in depth with maxine. it felt like a less-nuanced rehashing of the maxine that we knew and loved from X.
i did still enjoy the film! however, i had a feeling of disappointment while leaving the theater that i didn’t experience with its predecessors.
