Hooptober X: The FrighTENers
First time in a long time for me revisiting Tobe Hooper's seminal work. The whole movie is a masterclass in unease, first presenting a grimey, sweaty landscape of heat shimmer and road grit before transitioning to the Sawyer homestead which is practically a festering wound furnished with the Ed Gein home collection. The ominous, hollow score is a perfect complement to the wails, squeals, and cackling. But ultimately it's the ferocity of the nasty cast of cannibals--including the delightfully unhinged Hitchhiker and abusive Cook--and the sense of impending dread and desperation that left a lasting mark on the genre for decades to come.
Slasher Survey
Killer: The prototype for the hulking brute in a mask, Leatherface is an icon with a signature look and implement of destruction. Unfortunately he didn't learn the Five Ds of Dodgeball, and that is his undoing.
Final girl: Sally is a good runner with top-notch stamina and good survival instincts, but she does job to a broom at one point.
Victims: Hip youngsters in bellbottoms.
Best Kill: The suddenness and brutality of Franklin's death leaves no others in consideration. But shoutout to the way Kirk crumples after getting whacked.
