I had the pleasure tonight to see La La Land live in concert. Far and above my favorite film of 2016 and the only film I've seen 11 times in theaters (12 if you count tonight), I couldn't ask for a better final "theater" visit for a film that in time will probably become one of my all-time favorites.
La La Land is the reason why people go to the movies - if you don't believe me, ask the other 3,000 people who paid $30+ per ticket for tonight's event - and a truly pure film that brings people together.
I've argued this since day one: La La Land is as important a film as Moonlight, for different reasons of course. Moonlight is an important film on a societal level, breaking ground for race and sexuality in the modern age. It's a film that the world needed, and will remain an equality symbol for years to come.
La La Land is the film that cinema needed. In an age where Hollywood only cares about blockbusters and paychecks, La La Land is the proof that there are still visionaries and passion-projects that can change the game. It opened up the gates for a seemingly dead genre (did you know that The Academy has a category for Best Musical, but never uses it because not enough are made) and changed the structure, allowing musicals to break the rigid mold while still playing by the rules and using the tropes in new ways.
La La Land is a wonderful film and I could probably write another 10,000 words on why it's not only one of the greatest films of the 21st century, but one of my favorites.
