Well it’s about goddamn time I watched this one, right?!!

My problem with owning movies (digital or physical) is I always put them off because I think “ok I’ve got that one and it’s not going anywhere so let me watch this other streaming title since those bastards love to snatch that rug right out from under you”, but I’m working on getting better about that.

So, is this a modern day interpretation of Greek mythology? Or is this a cautionary tale about what happens when you try to one up your drinking buddy every day? Honestly it’s a little hard to say, but I can tell you that it’s all very homoseshual and really that does absolutely nothing to help answer what this bizarre and beautiful masterpiece is supposed to be because we gays love our cocktails and our cock tales. Zing!! I’m here all week folks.

It’s amazing how grimy and moldy and damp and disgusting Eggers makes this entire movie feel even though it’s filmed in black and white. Seriously, the whole time my OCD brain kept thinking “my goodness don’t they just want to get dry? Aren’t they miserable being wet?! Hell, I want to get dry and I already am! AND THE SMELL!!”. I should probably add that being stuck in soaking wet clothes or having wet hair drip down the back of my neck/shoulders (or Satan forbid both) are two of my worst sensory nightmare feelings possible so that all helped add an extra layer of terror for me in a most unpleasant yet effective way.

And some of those shots were just utterly brilliant. Obviously the closing one, but also the top of the lighthouse. I truly never had any opinion about Pattinson one way or another before this other than I hated the Twilight movies and he happened to be in them, but I didn’t hold it against him any more than I did KStew. But now I know the man is the real fucking deal.

Surprisingly, I can’t decide if I should put this on my real dark shit list. I mean, on the one hand it is definitely some of that real dark shit, but there’s also an immensely dark and wicked sense of humor that runs throughout almost the entire film that makes me wonder whether or not it really fits. I’m assuming that wasn’t just me who saw it that way right?
