Tony the Terror’s review published on Letterboxd:
Very well made slow burn Lovecraftian body horror that just hit all the right notes for me. I loved the setting and I’m ready to start looking for a beach vacation house of my own, preferably somewhere in North Carolina, but I digress.
It takes a little bit to get going, but it has a nice sense of dread while it gets there. Like you just aren’t quite sure exactly what to expect and even though you know something is definitely coming, you aren’t a sure what or where or when and the movie wisely doesn’t really give you a fucking clue until the shit hits the fan.. This worked especially well for me because I didn’t really read anything about this before I watched it so I really had no idea what even the story was about.
The scene with the creature growing inside her foot was some of the most cringeworthy shit I’ve seen in a long time and, fun facts, reminded me of when I was a kid I hit a wart on the bottom of my foot and at the time the best home treatment was this spray that basically froze the wart until it was numb and then you used a metal nail file to saw away slowly at the frozen edges of the wart until the spray wore off. You were supposed to do this nightly until the wart came off, but after about day 2 I was so disgusted with having that abomination on my foot that I locked myself in the bathroom and just started hacking away with the nail file until I sawed straight through the wart, screaming my lungs out the entire time because it fucking hurt like hell with my mom pounding on the door in terror of whatever was happening on the other side. I emerged bloody, traumatized, and tears running down my face, but also smiling because goddamnit I got rid of it! And I think it says a lot about the person I am today and the person I would be if I ended up in a Lovecraftian body horror like this.
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this and Noah Le Gros is fucking cute as hell. Just like his dad, he has a great body that isn’t ripped or perfect, but minus a half star for constantly having him in baggy clothes and her in fitted ones. FUCK the standards. Somebody have the balls to re/enact the needed change in male sexual exploitation already.
Edit: legit shocked, confused, and disappointed that the second most liked review is Matt Lynch writing yet another pointless one liner that isn’t remotely clever enough to merit the likes people blindly toss at it. Let’s put a stop to that madness already. I don’t know about you, but I need to keep hope for something more substantial alive. And I’m pretty sure in this day and age of 2020, we all do.
