I’m about to drop a really big truth bomb and it’s not a popular opinion at all but: I like this movie! I know most people hate it but I’ve always enjoyed it. I’m not saying it, in any way, compares to the original, but I am saying that I think it’s a solid horror movie that, if released on its own without the original movies existing, would be seen as a solid horror movie today.
The atmosphere and camerawork are superb. I think the choice to use so much cgi is very unfortunate, but I think there are some scenes that still managed to be effective as the first film. For example, I think the blood hallway on this one was equally effective as the pudding stairs in the original. I think the scenes of Tina being thrown around the ceiling was quite effective. Scenes that used cgi like Freddy trying to claw his way through the wall over Nancy’s bed were absolutely not as effective but that’s what happens when you go that route.
Is Jackie Earle Haley as good as Robert Englund? Absofuckinglutely not. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy his own interpretation of Freddy! I honestly love the cast in this one. Rooney Mara does “sleep deprivation” really well and makes that whole “heroin chic” look quite sexy. I’ve always had a bit of a crush on Kyle Gallner and if you want the full truth, it’s because I had a really hardcore sex dream about him shortly after I saw A Haunting in Connecticut so clearly my tastes run weird (and I hadn’t even come close to being married yet so hush but even still people have such dreams) but I consider this a safe space to reveal my darkest secrets (whether I should or not) and Kyle Fucking Gallner is one of them. Also, I’ll always love Katie Cassidy in anything because she’s just adorable. Don’t really get the whole Kellan Lutz thing tho since I’m laying it all out on the table. Like he’s ok, but pretty generic as far as that type goes? He was a pretty big deal when this came out but I’ve always just been like “nah”.
This is just one of those movies that hits all the right aesthetic notes for me and that means it’s the kind of movie that I’ll gladly play in the background whilst doing chores around the house. Sorry, not sorry. Not sorry at all.
