Finally some friends and I watched Barbenheimer back to back and for a long time I have not seen the cinema lobby so full but more about that in my Barbie review later today.
Oppenheimer was the first stop of our day and it was in the biggest cinema in my city on the biggest screen, the room was almost completely full and energetic from the beginning because you weren't sure what to expect from it. The energy was fierce and very palpable. In Oppenheimer you get 3 hours of pure dialogue, which is very dark and demanding, but exactly through this the viewer gets a deep insight into the brain of Oppenheimer himself. But we don't just learn about him, but also about the many side characters who don't get short and are all super interesting and important. The insight is not only into the characters of the film but also into the whole time back then, the tone of the film is dark and really special. Nolan manages to create an unbelievably oppressive atmosphere that remains constant for more than 3 hours and he manages to depict the topic of the atomic bomb very effectively, vividly and fearfull.
Over the whole running time you really don't have any fun and it is super exhausting to watch because it is really complex, but exactly that shows the quality of the film because in a film about such a topic you are not supposed to have any fun or make it seem too easy or harmless. For me, Nolan handled Oppenheimer perfectly and managed to create a really great film, which I will definitely see again, but maybe not right away, because you have to let it sink in and get used to it first.
Oppenheimer is also technically brilliant, with incredible camerawork and beautiful cinematography. And the perfectly written dialogues and the grandiose acting of ALL the characters. But for me the best part was the sound design which literally blew me away, full of unpleasant and pleasant noises and sounds I have never heard before. The soundtrack is insane and so tension building, the soundtrack just makes this film complete and is so incredibly important and sounds like a Hans Zimmer soundtrack!
So a true success for the world of film and especially cinema, so if you want to watch a long, sad, demanding exhausting and dialogue-heavy film about a serious subject with a fantastic quality in every aspect go watch it in the cinema! But for sure this movie is not for everyone because you really need to have the concentration and right mood fpr this heavyness and strenght. But overall a movie which stays in your mind and which masters almost everything that was possible to master in it.
