I am not prepared (nor, arguably, entitled) to parse all the countercultural messages and sociological underpinnings of this film beyond the obvious satire of the patriarchy's efforts to confine female power. I do feel confident in saying that all the mise-en-scene--production design, photography, acting style, costuming, editing and pacing--manages to feel familiar and wholly unique at the same time. It's a blend of Hitchcock, H.G. Lewis, Mario Bava, Douglas Sirk and Roger Corman that is so natural it's strange I've never seen it accomplished before.
Ironically though, for a film that seems to exist outside of time, it's at least 20 minutes too long.
