James Westbrook’s review published on Letterboxd:
Hey all, long time no see.
This is a quick note to let you know that last year I made a contemplative cinema feature, "Once Faithful", that's premiering this week in Los Angeles. If you're in the area it's screening at Regal L.A. Live at 2 p.m. this Wednesday February 28th as part of the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival. I would love for you all to see it if you're around and free.
You can find a trailer here, and more info about the screening here.
Here's what I wrote about the film for the festival's program:
"Up until the 1970s, a small baptist church in Atlanta held weekly church services for the low-income neighborhood around it. Fifty years later, that same building has been turned into loft apartments, the neighborhood around it gentrified to the point it's become unrecognizable, the still standing green cross on the building's front a hollow reminder of what it once was.
Over the course of several months the director documented that area in a series of time-lapses that compressed the long arc of hours into short minutes, capturing the building's unique architecture, the sweep of light from its stained-glass windows, and the rise and fall of days in a series of expressionist portraits. As these portraits flit by we hear snippets of several Baptist church services, of the kind that once occurred in that same building.
Once Faithful is both a location study and a ghost story, a film that captures the haunting, beautiful, and meditative spirit of so many places defined by their long forgotten past."
That's it! If you're wondering why I vanished from LB last year, it's because I've been focusing more on film projects like this one, and between that, work, and playing Elden Ring I haven't had time for much else.
Regardless, I'll be back (briefly) next week to write about some of my favorite films of last year.
See y'all then.
