I generally don’t like superhero movies. They always feel too scripted, too formulaic and too audience propelled (or should I say revenue propelled?). However, Black Panther manages to revolutionize the super hero genre- it is both familiar but fresh, and engrossing despite my initial apprehension.
I think the ultimate reason this movie (film, truly) feels so great is that it manages to subvert the expected. At its core, it’s a film about a power struggle, both internal and external. This is not new. At its essence, however, it expands this power struggle to a global one; it expands it and reverses the expected. This is new.
I could probably say a lot more words about this film, but I know others can probably say it better words than me. Ultimately, I’m glad this movie gave me more hope for film, but more importantly gave more hope to those watching who may not already have a superhero to encourage them.
