Amy the Noel/Noel the Amy’s review published on Letterboxd:
Just a couple of notes...
- Feels less like one coherent vision and more like a bunch of cliches strung together with the intent of making you cry being it's main priority while any other kind of structure or intent feels kinda secondary. - The Miyazaki/Ghibli comparisons are kinda bullshit considering how this never lets itself breathe naturally or have quiet moments to leave elements up to the viewer. Aesthetics aren't everything. - Generally found this way too overstimulating for my tastes but this is kind of a trend for me with modern American animation. I just don't like having my brain overloaded with "stuff" directly in my face to make sure I'm paying attention. - Liked the second half better than the "you've seen this before" ridden first but I also don't really like the ending. I can't remember for sure what elements were modified from the book since it's been years since I read it but I don't like the thematic implication that returning to a pre-determined role is necessary to save what you love. It just feels so counterproductive to everything else the movie built up, not just my worldview. - The animals were cute. - I like what they were doing with the visuals/animation more than PiB2 since it felt more consistent to me but it also never uses it's environments outside of making itself look pretty as a background. - I don't think these kinds of movies are for me anymore.
