Today with the ‘D’: Donnie Darko

Boo, another great regarded film that Marina understandably but unfortunately didn’t like that much. For me, it’s deserving of the ‘cult film’ status it has and must be one of the best of the era. It features a troubled boy who is faced with the prophecy of the end of the world and the philosophy of time travel. Truly interesting and unique, but with so much confusion at first impression you have to be able to connect with it or understand it. Personally, I appreciate this movie because it is one of the most that impacted me when I first started to really get into this community. On this second viewing, I didn't have that experience that made me crazy about it, but I did appreciate more of its thematic value. Remarkable in many aspects, such as Jake Gyllenhaal’s performance, the many iconic moments, the creativity in the concepts and craft, and the ideas it presents. Also, the cryptic atmosphere and aesthetic is conceived and handled in a great way by Richard Kelly. Frank’s design is great, and I just love all the craziness about it. I find fascinating the multiple interpretations that can be deduced from it, and honestly this is a movie that deserves much more exploration and that is my goal for the next viewing. This opportunity was more about it to present it to Marina, something I wanted to do since I watched it, and I already imagined that it was not going to be so much to her liking for several reasons. Let’s trust it’s just a matter of time, guys. -@uzhiel | 78/100

I have got to be honest, I couldn't quite grasp this movie. I understood its basic nature, but if I delve deeper, I just draw a blank… Donnie Darko is a pretty messed up kid that has these crazy hallucinantions of an incredibly eerie BLUE rabbit, and if that design doesn't scream "FNAF", I don't know what will. The other thing that it screams its pure schizophrenia, but I am not even sure if that is the actual case. We are presented with an idea of time travel, and that Donnie should've had a different path. The rabbit could just be a manifestation of something that we must deduce from the vagueness of the director. I don't even know, it will definitely go in the list of things I MUST rewatch. -@marina | 7.0/10
