I figured that now it's spooky szn, now it was the time to give The Witch a watch. I love how this movie is 90 minutes, it trims the fat that would have come along a story like this. The plot is surprisingly simple too and then it has all these different avenues that it can go through with a plot like this. It's one of the most unnerving horror films this decade and shows Robert Eggers as a film-maker to watch in the 2020s. All of the elements are able to come together to make an immersive experience.
It was really surprising that this was Robert Eggers's debut film because here he shows that he is a film-maker to be reckoned with. It has a Rosemary's Baby-ness to this with how shit gets fucked as the film progresses, it's not a very in your face horror movie. This makes sense if you've seen The Lighthouse, which is more Robert Eggers's style where layer by layer things uncover and that is the overall horror and he executes it flawlessly.
Jarin Blaschke creates a stunning movie, this is one of my favorite cinematographers, using natural light, and darkness to make a much more immersive experience. The overall sound design is amazing, knowing when to heighten our experience and when to make it dead silent. It builds certain scenes up, and the long takes, slow camera movements are able to sneak upon us. All of these elements come together that makes The Witch a movie that you can feel and a very immersive experience.
The movie isn't really about a witch, and it doesn't really have all these horror tropes attached to it. It's about a terrible supernatural situation and how it affects the family, and how it tears this family apart, suspecting each other as apart of it and that's where layer by layer, minute by minute, building to its' chaotic conclusion. It trims all the fat with its 90-minute runtime (which is always a plus for me). It felt more realistic and more grounded. I think if they trimmed a little bit more from the first act, then it would have been as perfect as The Lighthouse for me.
Anya Taylor Joy and Ralph Ineson were both fantastic here. Ralph Ineson gives a very intense performance here, and Anya Taylor Joy was just fantastic, she was an unknown at the time and it makes sense that she's on this upward trend. I thought the boy here was hit or miss at times, In some scenes he's great but in other scenes he's meh. And that goat, best acting done by a goat?
The Witch shows Robert Eggers's talents right out of the gate, it's one of the best debut films of the past 10 years for sure. It shows his talents to get all these elements and have them come together to create for a film you can feel, he has the utmost confidence in his craft and shows his fascinations with the mythical aspects of history. With this and The Lighthouse, and The Northman still being filmed. He's going to be a must-watch director.
