A much stranger, more esoteric film than its reputation for cozy Yuletide viewing would suggest, with its cosmic prologue, heavenly angels and speculative narrative structure feeling more like a precursor to the David Lynch of The Elephant Man or Wild at Heart than to other festive favorites, like A Christmas Story or Home Alone. Enthused and enlivened by a post-war spirit of care and compassion (almost socialist in its politics, despite the filmmaker's own conservative leanings), Capra's masterwork is an ode to community, to human goodness, and to the significance of all life, no matter how apparently unimportant it seems to the individual.
