A film so eager to be so many things, executed with incredible confidence. It’s exciting stuff, easy to get absorbed in the performances, especially the magnetic Gascón. However, it most certainly bites off more than it can chew. As a trans story, as a musical, and as an ode to the missing in Mexico, it only partially delivers on each. But it’s easy to admire and enjoyable to watch as the bold swing it is.
