Wholesome, charming, and lots of fun, this is a pretty brilliant slice of life film (with a twist! Magic! Hell yeah!) It is really great as a coming-of-age film, as a fantasy film, and as an early outing for Ghibli. It's especially impressive that they still had amazing ideas after exerting so much of their creative abilities on two of the best films ever made in the form of My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies. With beautiful animation, a simple story, and a strangely but awesomely epic climax, it is definitely one of the best. And Jiji is one of the best comic relief characters ever. Sarcastic cats are key to good storytelling.
