🎄Christmas Aboard the Enterprise 🚀
First Contact has the distinction of being the only non-Abrams Trek film I'd seen prior to my marathon and for good reason–I was enticed by a reputation it has rightfully earned as a solid outing that is more accessible to franchise newcomers than most of the films in its company (statements that are true as far as I'm concerned). The spectacle is turned up here, as are the stakes–a combination that yields some contemporary popcorn entertainment value to go with the reliable Trek formula. However, my rewatch did not entirely favor my previously positive estimation of the film.
Round two made this affair feel slightly more sluggish and that is almost entirely due to the jarring narrative split between two related but tonally incompatible storylines. The Borg are as fearsome as I remember and watching Captain Picard take them on was just as engaging as it was the first time. The time spent on an Earth of the past, however, suffers from its curiously cheery mood and weightlessness, things that repeatedly threaten to undermine the tension of the film's other plot threads (it also suffers from comparison, be it fair or not to the superlative time-travel exploits of The Voyage Home).
This is still a fine piece of sci-fi entertainment, with exciting action and the right focus on bridging the legacy of a storied franchise with a modern treatment. It may not be the most riveting chapter of the series but it's a fine one nonetheless. I still miss Kirk and co. but unlike wit the first Picard-starrer, I felt like I was watching a true Trek adventure in the ways that matter. Not bad for the franchise's 30th anniversary continuation.
Scavenger Hunt 69 #16 of 31 - Watch a vampire film (it's Christmas season and I've seen like twenty vampire movies this year so I'm counting the Borg as cyber vampires from space).
